The understanding of Assessment Objectives is key to high performance at both GCSE and A-level.
The assessment objectives are set by Ofqual (not individual exam boards) so they are consistent across the qualifications.

Who are we?
I am Caroline, a qualified teacher who has taught geography since 2011. While I still teach part-time in a college, my main focus is tutoring geography, alongside science and the other humanities subjects..
I specialise in making the subject accessible, whether you are just starting your geography journey, or whether you are an A-level student preparing for university; I am here to support you in every step of your journey.
“Geography is boring!” (pretty much most students)
When I do the enrolment at my college, obviously I want as many students as possible to pick geography, but I often come across the “geography is boring” or “I hate geography” and I always ask myself why this is. Having taught for far too long, I have narrowed it down to a few options:
- You had a poor experience in school – this might be through having non-specialist teachers, or teachers who have lost their passion (unfortunately both of these things can happen).
- You have been in a class full of students who didn’t pick geography and felt or were forced to do it – this can impact on lessons when students feel disgruntled.
- The topics didn’t interest you – I am not going to lie, I am very much a physical geographer, although, somewhat strangely, I do actually prefer teaching human geography!
- You weren’t challenged, you didn’t have to think, you were taught what you needed to know and shown how to answer questions.
Well! I have good news for you, geography is none of those things if you have the passion for the subject (or a lost passion that can be reignited!) and someone to work alongside you to explore the world and develop your interests.
“Jack of all trades, master of none”
The quote above is a phrase that first appeared in 1612; it is often used as an insult to suggest that someone has lots of skills but no expertise – and this is exactly what geography can be – and in a good way!
There is a reason that geography is a popular choice for universities for many subjects, and that is that it develops many skills rather than focusing on one particular area – it shows that you are capable of studying pretty much any subject, and what you have a wide range of skills, for example:
- Coasts – Links to maths and physics
- Places – Links to sociology and psychology, as well as history
- Ecosystems – Links to biology, and chemistry as you progress up the different stages
- Hazards – Links to RE, people who believe in god are often more accepting of hazards!
There are many more examples that I could give, but if you take any topic in geography – you can link it to numerous other subjects – go on, I dare you!
